What Do You Do When the Things That Bring You Joy Aren’t Available?
What do you do when everything (or at least it feels like everything) that brings you joy suddenly isn’t accessible to you?
I’ve been sitting with this question lately in a very real way.
I’m currently recovering from a concussion after two accidents, and part of my healing has meant limiting many of the things I normally turn to for pleasure, creativity and comfort.
Screens.
Reading.
Driving.
Music and other auditory stimulation.
Even moving my body the way I love to—especially dancing.
And if you know me, you know that dancing isn’t just exercise for me.
It’s part of who I am.
So when so many of my normal sources of joy became temporarily unavailable, I found myself asking:
Okay…what is available to me?
And something beautiful started to happen.
When Life Gets Smaller, We Notice What’s Still Here
Sometimes we become so accustomed to the things that bring us joy that we don’t even realize how much we rely on them.
Until they’re gone.
Maybe you’ve experienced this in a completely different way.
A relationship ends.
Your body asks you to slow down.
Money gets tighter.
Someone you love is no longer here.
Your plans change unexpectedly.
Something you thought you’d be able to do suddenly isn’t possible.
Our first instinct can be to focus on everything that’s been taken away.
And believe me, I’ve had those moments.
But this experience has also been gently asking me to turn my attention toward a different question:
What is still accessible to me right now?
For me, one answer has been my voice.
I’ve found myself feeling incredibly grateful that I can speak. I can record little audios. I can share what’s moving through me. I can create without having to stare at a screen for hours.
I’ve also developed a heightened awareness of my body.
I’m learning to notice the moment when my body says:
That’s enough.
Not five minutes later.
Not after I’ve pushed through because I think I should be able to do more.
Right then.
And that might be one of the unexpected gifts inside this season.
Receiving What Is Available
This isn’t about pretending limitations are wonderful.
It’s not about forcing yourself to find the silver lining when something genuinely sucks.
And it’s definitely not about bypassing disappointment, frustration, grief or anger with gratitude.
Sometimes you need to say:
I really hate that I can’t do this right now.
I’ve had those moments too.
But both things can exist.
I can miss dancing and appreciate what my body can do today.
I can be frustrated by my limitations and be grateful for my voice.
I can want my normal life back and become curious about the life that’s available to me right now.
Maybe that’s part of what self-trust actually looks like.
Not trusting that everything will always go according to plan.
But trusting ourselves enough to meet the version of life that’s actually here.
A Question for You
If you’re in a season where something you want isn’t available to you right now, I want to invite you to ask yourself:
What is accessible to me?
What can you enjoy?
What can you create?
Who can you connect with?
What feels good in your body?
What tiny pleasure have you been overlooking because you’ve been focused on what you can’t have?
Your answer doesn’t have to be profound.
Maybe it’s sitting outside with your morning coffee.
Calling a friend.
Taking a slow walk.
Listening to the birds.
Writing something down.
Taking a nap.
Laughing.
Breathing.
Creating in a completely different way than you normally would.
Sometimes life doesn’t ask us to push harder.
Sometimes it asks us to notice.
And right now, I’m learning that there can still be joy here—even when “here” isn’t where I expected to be.
So I’ll leave you with the question I’m asking myself:
When the things you normally reach for aren’t available, what beautiful thing is still within reach?
With Love,
Diana
