Are You Future-Tripping in Your Relationships? A Yoga Lesson I Never Forgot

I wasn’t exactly a born yogi.

I’m restless. I don’t particularly enjoy being still, and when I first started practicing yoga, my goal was basically to be the most flexible person in the room with her leg up the highest.

Yes, it was obnoxious.

But that’s what happens when you put a former ballerina in a room full of mirrors. We want to look amazing!

Anyway…

One day, our teacher had us move into Warrior 2.

I bent my front knee as deeply as humanly possible, convinced she would surely notice my fabulous form. My thigh was burning, and I stretched my front arm forward with so much force you’d think I was reaching for the last cup of water on Earth.

It wasn’t comfortable.

Actually, it was pretty painful.

My teacher came over, made a few adjustments and told me to breathe.

Okay.

Then she started talking to the whole class.

And you know when a teacher starts giving a “general” lesson to everyone, but you know it’s probably because of something YOU just did?

I used to teach high school English.

I know the deal.

She explained that when you’re in Warrior 2 and you stretch your torso too far forward, all of your energy is reaching toward something that isn’t here yet.

You’re living in the future.

If you lean too far back, you’re pulling your energy toward what’s already happened.

You’re living in the past.

But the power of the pose is right in the center.

Instead of reaching desperately forward or hanging backward, sink your energy down.

Feel both feet.

Breathe.

Be where you actually are.

The power is in the present.

Well.

That about summed up my entire life.

How Often Do We Do This in Relationships?

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve “future-tripped” in love.

Everything could be perfectly fine in the present moment, but my mind would already be five miles down the road preparing for the next little tragedy that was surely about to happen.

What if he changes his mind?

What if this doesn’t work out?

Why did he say it like THAT?

What if I’m missing something?

Hello, anxiety.

Or I’d go in the opposite direction.

I’d replay something that had already happened, obsess over what I’d said or hadn’t said, or think about a relationship that had ended and wish I could somehow go backward and change it.

Same body.

Same brain.

Different direction.

And neither one had very much to do with what was actually happening right now.

That’s what hit me so deeply in that yoga class.

I had been searching for peace by trying to figure everything out.

Maybe peace wasn’t going to come from finally having all the answers.

Maybe it came from coming back to where my feet actually were.

Your Intuition Lives in the Present

This is something I understand very differently now than I did when I originally learned that Warrior 2 lesson.

When we’re constantly scanning the future for what could go wrong, or using something that happened in the past to predict what will happen next, it gets really difficult to hear ourselves clearly.

There’s too much energetic noise.

And if you’re naturally intuitive and sensitive, you can pick up on A LOT.

A facial expression.

A slightly different tone of voice.

A text that seems shorter than usual.

A shift in someone’s energy.

But noticing something and immediately constructing an entire story around it are two different things.

Sometimes you did pick up on something.

Sometimes the person is tired.

Sometimes an old wound got activated.

Sometimes you simply don’t have enough information yet.

Self-trust doesn’t mean ignoring what you notice.

It means staying grounded enough to notice it without immediately abandoning the present moment to figure out the future.

Come Back to Your Feet

So if you catch yourself future-tripping in a relationship this week, try my yoga teacher’s advice.

Come back to your body.

Feel your feet.

Take a breath.

Then ask yourself:

What do I actually know to be true right now?

Not what happened six months ago.

Not what you’re afraid might happen Friday.

Not the conversation you’ve already rehearsed seventeen times in your head.

Right now.

And if something needs to be addressed, you can address it.

If you need more information, you can ask.

If your intuition keeps nudging you toward something, you can listen.

But you don’t have to stretch yourself so far into the future that you hurt yourself trying to get there.

Sometimes your power is right underneath you.

This Week’s Soul Question

Where have you been spending more energy lately: replaying the past or trying to predict the future?

And what helps bring you back to right now?

I’d love to hear what works for you in the comments.

With Love,

Diana
